Preparing images for upload

Applies to images being uploaded to your Collection, a facility available to Members only.

The maximum image file size that you can upload to CollectingFriends.com is 2MB, but a more useful guide for image preparation is the image’s pixel dimensions and resolution.

The largest size that any image on CollectingFriends.com will ever appear is 620 pixels wide x n pixels high (the height n being in proportion to the width). You will see images of this size when you click an image in a Collection.

Consequently, there is no point uploading an image larger than this, as it will be downsampled (reduced in size) on upload.

You should prepare your image using a program such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Image Ready or Macromedia Fireworks (others are available). In the following example we will assume you’re using Photoshop:

  1. Begin with your image as large as possible. You will resize it later.
  2. In Photoshop, rotate and crop the image as necessary, and apply whatever adjustments/filters the picture demands in order to get it looking just right.
  3. When you’re happy, choose Image Size from the Image menu; set the resolution to 72 pixels/inch, and the width to 620 pixels. Make sure that Constrain Proportions is checked, so that the image’s height will be set in proportion with its width.
  4. Save your image as a JPEG file (the image filename will end in .jpg) and apply as little compression as possible.
